For the fourth year in a row, our students and their teacher Lidia Sydoriv participate in the Symposium on Inclusive Education – an event that brings together Ukrainian and international scholars and practitioners. Over the course of two days, the participants share their experiences on sustainable development of education and society, teaching students with special educational needs and rehabilitation of soldiers, leadership and advocacy, support and implementation of inclusive practices.
Our students performed “Raise the flag” poetry in Ukrainian sign language, which was also subtitled and translated into English. The poem was written more than a century ago and is dedicated to the Ukrainian Sich riflemen whom were the first national military organization that fought for the independence of Ukraine. Konstantyna Malytska (1872-1947) was born in the village of Kropyvnyk, received education in the town of Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk), worked as a teacher in Galicia and Bukovyna, was interned to Siberia by the russians, died and was buried in Lviv. She contributed immensely for national literature and education, organized Ukrainian women and war relief efforts for soldiers.
Therefore, the choice of the poetry shows the students’ understanding of the importance of serving the ideals of truth and dignity, and it is a tribute to those, who have been holding the flag of unity and freedom.
